Resolving Email Template Errors Caused by an Invalid MailChimp API Key

Steps to fix email template errors in Smartr365 caused by an expired, revoked, or deactivated MailChimp API key in Business Settings.

This article explains how to resolve email template errors in Smartr365 caused by an invalid or deactivated MailChimp API key.

Overview

Smartr365 allows firms to integrate with MailChimp for email templates and campaigns. If the MailChimp API key has expired, been revoked, or is otherwise invalid, email templates will display errors and cannot be used until the integration credentials are updated.

Symptoms

  • Email templates show an error when loading or in use

  • Templates that previously worked are no longer loading correctly

  • The error references the MailChimp integration or an external email service

Resolution Steps

  1. Log in to Smartr365 and navigate to Settings > Business Settings (or Integrations, depending on your configuration).

  2. Locate the MailChimp integration section.

  3. Log in to your MailChimp account separately and generate a new API key:

    • In MailChimp: Account > Extras > API Keys

    • Click Create A Key and copy the full key

  4. Paste the new API key into the MailChimp integration field in Smartr365 Business Settings and save.

  5. Return to your email templates and confirm they load correctly.

Common Issues

  • No access to the MailChimp account: Ensure you have administrator access to the MailChimp account linked to your firm. If access has been lost, contact your firm's IT administrator or MailChimp support.

  • Error persists after updating the key: Confirm the key was copied in full with no extra spaces. Try logging out and back in to Smartr365. If the issue continues, contact Smartr365 support.

  • MailChimp account is deactivated: If the MailChimp account itself has been closed, you will need to reactivate it or create a new MailChimp account and re-link it in Smartr365 Settings.
